Tutorial on In Situ STEM Published in ACS Nano
In our new tutorial in ACS Nano, we provide a comprehensive overview of the key factors that impact the success of in situ and operando (S)TEM, one of the most powerful approaches to studying material and chemical dynamics. This tutorial was conceived and led by Michelle Smeaton and Katie Jungjohann—it was also a pleasure to collaborate with Ray Uncocic and Patricia Abellan.
We organized this tutorial as a resource for students, collaborators, and non-specialists who are interested in learning more about this powerful characterization technique. It covers a wide range of topics, including:
Properly planning your experiment
Preparing your sample
Avoiding artifacts
Analyzing your data
My focus is on data analytics and the use of statistical analyses to extract knowledge from complex, time-varying data. These methods are still very much in their infancy and there is an opportunity for students to make a substantial impact here.
I encourage everyone to read the full tutorial to learn more about this exciting technique. It is a must-read for anyone who is interested in using electron microscopy to study the nanoscale properties of materials.
