R&D 100 Award for AutoEM
Last night I was honored to rejoin my old friends Sarah Akers, Matthew Olszta, and James Haag to receive the R&D 100 Award for our Autonomous Electron Microscope (AutoEM)!
The path to today started 8 years ago with some discussions Sarah, Matt, and I had about how automation and machine learning could transform discovery of anomalies in materials. The whole process of developing AutoEM has been a challenge, but we had an incredible team and people like Jennifer Lee who strongly backed us early on.
It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career to work with such brilliant and passionate scientists. I’m grateful to all the team members and those who supported us, including Kayla Yano, Christina Doty, Kevin Fiedler, Derek Hopkins, Marjolein Oostrom, and Kannan Krishnaswami.
I’m excited to see how this and other technologies will begin to reshape electron microscopy. It has been great to work with Tom Isabell and Daniel Masiel at JEOL USA and we’re more optimistic than ever about the autonomous future of microscopy!
